Tampa Bay Lightning Extend Brayden Point to 8-Year Extension

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Brayden Point to an 8-year contract extension, a $9.5 million per season deal.

It was reported Tuesday night Brayden Point was likely to sign a new deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Eight years and $9.5 million per season keeps Point in town. He’s not a big guy but he plays like a big player, he’s absolutely clutch in the game’s biggest moment and he’s been a major contributor to the Lightning’s two Stanley Cup victories.

Point sticking in Tampa is a huge win for the club. There are going to be plenty of questions about $9.5 million players signed this season but Point won’t be one of them. He’s earning every penny of that contract and he’s going to be a value at the annual average salary. No matter which way you look at the deal — based on analytics or the on-ice eye test — Point is about as good a bargain at a high salary as you’ll find in the NHL.

Now one of the top centers in the NHL, Point is also a two-way beast who drives play at an elite level. GM Julien BriseBois had a lot of great things to say about the 25-year-old. His deal will take him to the age of 34. The GM said:

Brayden is a key contributor to the Lightning’s success and one of the most dynamic players in the NHL. To be able to agree to terms with him on a long-term contract is great news for our organization going forward. Not only is Brayden a skilled player, he is also a fierce competitor who fits in well with the pedigree of our team. Our organization looks forward to having him be a big part of this team for many years to come.
