NHL Trade Talk Recap: Oilers, Canucks, Penguins, Maple Leafs
NHL Trade Talk Recap Jan.23: Oilers and penalty calls, Canucks Miller trade, Penguins won’t do a fire sale, and Ryan Reaves’ future.
In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (Jan. 23), several teams are rumored to be interested in making trades, many of those teams looking at J.T. Miller. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan shares something with Mario Lemieux. What record are they tied for? Meanwhile, should the Edmonton Oilers be bracing for overcompensation calls after Connor McDavid’s suspension?
In Pittsburgh, Kyle Dubas brushed off rumors of a “fire sale,” emphasizing that the Penguins remain committed to winning. The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers are both permitted to speak to J.T. Miller. Has the Rangers’ interest cooled due to cap concerns?
Other reports include the return of Kirill Kaprizov and Jared Spurgeon for the Minnesota Wild and updates on Jacob Markstrom’s status.

Oilers Beat Canucks in Rematch, McDavid’s Return Could Change Officiating
An insider noted that officials will likely be “on high alert” after McDavid’s suspension. Teams might see more calls in favor of McDavid. However, could it be that there might also be more calls against the Oilers? McDavid has been puzzled by the Oilers’ low power play count. Will the officiating change when McDavid returns to play? If so, which way might it lean?
The Oilers played the Canucks in the rematch on Thursday night. There was no McDavid and a lot of chatter the Oilers might get nasty against Conor Garland. The game did get a bit feisty, but it was a dominant performance by the Oilers, winning 6-2.

J.T. Miller Trade Talks: Hurricanes & Rangers Are Interested
As Elliotte Friedman reported, two teams show interest in trading for the Canucks JT Miller. Those include the Carolina Hurricanes and (still) the New York Rangers. Both have permission to speak with Miller. It was also reported that the Rangers backed off due to Miller’s cap hit. While the Canucks prefer roster players over futures in trade talks, if a trade were on the table that could work, what will the Canucks do?
Kyle Dubas Denies “Fire Sale” Rumors for Penguins
Although rumors exist that the Pittsburgh Penguins would trade everyone except for Sidney Crosby, GM Kyle Dubas denied any rumors of a Penguins “fire sale.” He noted that the Penguins will focus on building for the future. However, to him, that didn’t mean dismantling the team. What will happen in the Steel City if the Penguins remain out of the playoffs at the trade deadline?

Does Ryan Reaves Still Have a Role for the Maple Leafs?
In the loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ryan Reaves had his first fight of the season. It failed to spark his Toronto Maple Leafs teammates or the crowd. That begs the question: does Toronto need an enforcer or a more balanced lineup? Is Reaves’ role still relevant in the Maple Leafs’ upcoming playoff push?
