2 Teams Allowed to Speak to Miller, Why Rangers Deal Collapsed

Two teams reportedly have permission to speak to J.T. Miller about a trade, and an insider details why the trade to Rangers collapsed.

In his latest 32 Thoughts column, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that two teams have been granted to speak to J.T. Miller about a trade — the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers. It’s not clear if either team is close to a deal, or if Miller has expressed interest in making a move. What is known is that Miller has not requested a trade from the Canucks.

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports the Rangers have backed off a little in terms of their chase for Miller. The Rangers were the frontrunners but Seravalli says that the team was not keen on taking Miller’s full cap hit, in totality. He explains:

“I think that became a non-starter at some point during their talks and ultimately, what ended up scuttling that and for the Vancouver Canucks, depending on what they’re looking for to get in return, a big part of that deal would have been to take the cap space that you have for moving on from JT Miller and potentially some of those assets and then flipping them to make your team better in the short term…”

The Canucks still want to be a contender, even though they’ve opened up to the idea of trading for futures and prospects. If they can move those for roster players, that’s their preference.

Who Is The Favorite to Land Miller Now?

Friedman noted that the Hurricanes and Rangers are two teams with permission to talk to J.T. Miller. It is believed the Hurricanes have stepped up and shown more interest in recent days. Names being linked in talks include Jesperi Kotkaniemi or Jack Roslovic.

Seravalli did admit the Rangers weren’t out of this completely. Their original offer was rumored to be Filip Chytil, a first-rounder and a prospect. The Rangers have the cap room to do it, writes the insider.

Friedman also notes, “I get very mixed messages on New Jersey.” He adds that he’s not convinced about Dallas but says, “I always assume I’m missing something, though.”
