NHL In Process of Voiding Evgenii Dadonov Trade to Ducks
Reports are coming in that the NHL is going to void the Evgenii Dadonov trade that Vegas and Anaheim made at the deadline.
As per a report by Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, it appears the trade between the Anaheim Ducks and Vegas Golden Knights that included Evgenii Dadonov going to the Ducks will be voided. Seravalli writes, “Expecting official word to come today. It’s been a complicated, layered process with many parties involved.”

If this trade is voided, questions about what the Golden Knights do next will be front and center. The team could still trade Dadonov to another club who doesn’t care if he plays or not, but it certainly wouldn’t look good on a franchise for doing so, especially the Golden Knights, who have quickly earned a reputation for being ruthless in their drive to win a Stanley Cup.
As is outlined in the CBA, teams can still acquire players from other clubs after March 21. The caveat is that any player traded after the March 21 deadline is not eligible to play the rest of the season.
For those not aware of the situation, Dadonov signed a three-year contract with the Ottawa Senators on October 15, 2020 as a free agent. Part of his deal included a 10-team no-trade list which needed to be submitted before the July 1 submission deadline. Reports have suggested he provided the Senators with that list on June 30, 2021, and that it named the Anaheim Ducks as one of the 10 teams. Vegas is contending it was not aware of the list or that the Ducks were on it and traded him during Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline.
Where this is some discrepancy is that usual practice would have been for Ottawa to forward a copy of the no-trade list to the Knights after the trade since that clause would still apply and had to be honored by his new team.
What About the Cap Situation For Vegas?
If Dadonov stays on the roster, Vegas will have some cap juggling to do. The main reason for the trade was to free up cap space for the eventual return of players who might be back with the team before the postseason. The Golden Knights are outside the playoff picture and they’ll need their best players to help them get in.
As per CapFriendly, the Golden Knights keeping Dadonov would mean, trouble for activating players like Mark Stone or Alec Martinez. “As a result they would now need to clear: $4,844,167 to activate Martinez $9,094,167 to activate Stone.”
Another question that will need to be answered is if the Golden Knights are playing over the salary cap right now and that every game they play until this is sorted out is being played illegally.
