Claude Giroux Open to Signing With Senators Next Season?

Reports are out there that Claude Giroux might be open to signing with the Ottawa Senators as a free agent next season.

As per a report by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, “No guarantee it happens, but I do believe Claude Giroux is doing his research on Ottawa.” In other words, speculation that he would be open to joining the Senators next season is no longer just speculation, but he’s doing his due diligence to figure out if the Senators would be the right fit for him or not.

Giroux is from Ottawa and he’s been linked to the team before. That said, the Senators are a young team with hopes for bigger things, but aren’t terribly competitive yet. They’ve got some good young pieces and could use some veteran leadership, but it’s unlikely Giroux would be playing for a winner as he closes his NHL career. But, if he wants to play in front of family and friends or he wants to shift the narrative in Ottawa that the team won’t bring in big names and show they want to win, he could be a key to moving that franchise forward in the right direction.

Giroux going to the Senators might attract fans to games and get other free agents to look at the team in a light they’ve really not in the past few seasons.

What Would Have to Happen For Giroux to Sign?

What happens this season for Giroux could be the key to his future in the NHL and in particular, with the Ottawa Senators. If he wins as a member of the Florida Panthers, he’ll be able to say he’s won a Stanley Cup. If he doesn’t, he might want to chase one and that won’t happen in Ottawa.

One has to wonder what situation would make him consider the Senators more: winning the Stanley Cup or coming close? If he does either, perhaps he takes a leap and joins a team that could be inching closer to winning and ready to make moves that will make them a competitor. Giroux could be the catalyst for all of that.
