Edmonton Oilers Trade for Veteran Forward Derick Brassard

The Edmonton Oilers acquired Derick Brassard from the Philadelphia Flyers in a last-minute NHL Trade deadline deal on Monday.

Now it making it 10 NHL franchises he’s played for, Derick Brassard will be making his next stop with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers acquired Brassard from the Philadelphia Flyers in a last-minute deadline deal on Monday. The Oilers gave up a fourth-round draft pick in the 2023 draft.

The Flyers retained 50% on Brassard’s salary in the deal with the Oilers. He was an $825K cap hit.

Brassard will offer the Oilers some depth scoring, another body on the penalty kill and a faceoff guy, which could be critical down the stretch as the Oilers try to work their way through the playoffs with less than ideal goaltending.

Brassard also offers some offense. He’s hit or miss, but has been having a strong season with the Flyers, appearing in 31 games and scoring six goals and 16 points. He’s also playing 14:22 per night, which is big for a team that needs a bottom-six veteran, especially as Josh Archibald can’t travel with the team across the border.

There’s very little risk for the Oilers in this deal considering what they’ll be paying to add the depth and that they aren’t committed to this contract past this season.

Former NHL player Marc Methot writes, “Edmonton fans will be pleased with Derick Brassard. He was one of Philly’s best forwards the other night in Ottawa. Such a smart player but more importantly, he’s a good team guy. Nice pick up.”

The Oilers also traded for defenseman Brett Kulak in a deadline deal on Monday.
