The Carolina Hurricanes got a trade in under the wire on Monday’s NHL Trade Deadline. They have added Max Domi from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Prospect Aiden Hreschuk is rumored to be going back the other way. Elliotte Friedman reports, “For accounting purposes, the Max Domi deal is a three-way between CAR/FLA/CLB. Some salary retention and prospects are involved. See how it shapes out after the trade call.”

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reported earlier this week that the Blue Jackets were actively trying to move the player and it wasn’t clear there was a lot of interest based on Domi’s inconsistent play and his salary. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Hurricanes got the Blue Jackets to retain salary and take some money back in the deal.
Domi could be a player that adds a lot to the Hurricanes if he meshes well on a really strong team. If he can find himself a role on the roster, this could be one of the better adds of the deadline. And, considering the Hurricanes didn’t really do anything until the final minutes of the day, this was a sneaky addition. His defensive underlying numbers aren’t great but his points per minute are good and he’s proven he’s got offensive potential here.
Domi makes $5.3 million in the final year of his contract and is a pending UFA at the end of the season. He’s not worth the money he’s making, but we’ll see how much of the contract the Blue Jackets retained.
