Update on Jacob Markstrom Injury, Devils’ Goalie Will Miss Time

Jacob Markstrom suffered an injury for the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday, and head coach Sheldon Keefe thinks Markstrom will miss time.

Goaltender Jacob Markstrom left Wednesday’s game against the Boston Bruins following a collision with Justin Brazeau. Markstrom, who needed assistance getting off the ice, is expected to “miss some time,” according to head coach Sheldon Keefe.

Markstrom’s injury comes at an unfortunate time for both the Devils and Team Sweden. He’s been steady in the net for New Jersey, and with the 4 Nations Face-Off just around the corner, the timing isn’t at all ideal. Adding to Team Sweden’s worries, Linus Ullmark’s availability is also uncertain.

Some Positive News on Markstrom

Keefe seemed optimistic when talking about Markstrom’s condition. He stated: “He’s feeling a lot better now than he was before, so that’s positive news.” Still, the full extent of the injury is unknown. The hope is that there will be more information on Thursday or Friday.

During the game, Markstrom lay facedown on the ice in visible discomfort before skating off under his own power and getting a couple of stick taps from players on the Bruins roster. He did not return, and Jake Allen stepped in for the remainder of the contest.

Updates on Markstrom’s status are expected in the coming days, but for now, his absence adds uncertainty to both Sweden’s tournament hopes and New Jersey’s playoff push.

Elliotte Friedman noted in his 32 Thoughts column, “One thing to remember: if Jake Allen plays 40 games, the Canadiens get a second-round selection at the upcoming draft. If not, it’s a third. (He’s at 15.)”
