Insider: More Stars Roster Changes Coming at Trade Deadline
According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Dallas Stars aren’t done adjusting their roster ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline on March 7. During the 32 Thoughts podcast, Friedman noted, “I don’t think the Stars are finished changing the makeup of their defense. I think they could change it further.” He added,” I think it’s possible that maybe somebody else goes out and someone else comes in.”
He said the team is supposed to find out the fate of Miro Heiskanene on Monday, and if he’ll be back before the playoffs. “I don’t think it’s impossible that they continue to remake their blue line at least once more.”
This past weekend, the Stars acquired both Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund from the San Jose Sharks. This trade is one that many NHL teams looking for help up front and on the blue line will copy. Now it seems like the Stars are going to continue to change up their roster ahead of the deadline. This strategy is quite typical for the Dallas Stars.
Potential Targets:
Friedman said the Stars will most likely target defense on the trade market. There are a few available defensemen who could fit well into their system. A few options that they could acquire are:
- Scott Mayfield – New York Islanders
- Rasmus Ristolainen – Philadelphia Flyers
- Brian Dumoulin – Anahiem Ducks
- Tyson Barrie – Calgary Flames
There are a few other options that could be on the trade block. However, with so many teams within arms reach, it will likely cost more for teams to acquire the players they want. The good thing for the Stars is that their team has a system that can welcome just about any style player into it, and they will find some sort of success. They also have a history of targeting older veterans, which they could do again. The Dallas Stars always find a way to make the system work for their team.
The only question left to answer is, how much will Dallas be willing to pay to acquire another defenseman?
Currently, they don’t have a first or second-round pick in the upcoming 2025 NHL draft. They do have a third-round pick that could be used. If the Stars could acquire a David Savard from the Montreal Canadiens, they would need to look at their draft picks next season, plus more.
It could be a challenge to acquire some more help on defense, but it appears Dallas wants to add something else to their blue line.
