NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs, Canucks & Oilers Miss Levi
The Maple Leafs shuffle depth, Canucks swap Hoglander for Gallagher, Oilers miss on Levi as goalie search continues before July 1.
This NHL Trade Talk Recap (June 29, 2026) covers Monday’s moves, and it was a busy one. The Maple Leafs moved on from Matias Maccelli, re-signed Troy Stecher, and put qualifying offers out to keep a few young guys around. The Canucks traded Nils Hoglander to Nashville. And they got Brendan Gallagher from the Canadiens (with Montreal retaining salary). And the Oilers checked out Devon Levi but couldn’t get a deal done. So they’re still looking for a goalie with the July 1 deadline coming up.

Maple Leafs Moves: Maccelli Gone, Stecher Stays
Monday was a pretty active day for Toronto. The Maple Leafs moved on from Matias Maccelli, signed Troy Stecher to an extension, and put qualifying offers out to keep Nick Robertson, Emil Andrae, and Jacob Quillan in the mix.
So why didn’t they tender Maccelli a qualifying offer? It mostly came down to fit and value. He overlapped with Max Domi’s kind of role, his price ended up around $4.1M-ish, and he didn’t give them the special-teams boost they really needed. The Maple Leafs basically decided he was decent enough support to justify that kind of money. Now they can open the door for some Marlies players to earn a call-up.

Canucks Trade Hoglander to Predators; Get Gallagher from Canadiens
Vancouver traded Nils Hoglander to Nashville, then quickly acquired veteran winger Brendan Gallagher from Montreal. Montreal is retaining 50% of Gallagher’s salary. As a result, his cap hit for the Canucks is much lower than it normally would be.
Hoglander has struggled to replicate his earlier scoring and hasn’t fit the Canucks’ plans. On the other hand, Gallagher brings a leadership boost and credibility. Plus, he brings an added homecoming story of being a Vancouver guy.

Oilers Checked out Devon Levi… But no Trade
The Oilers apparently did real research on Buffalo goalie Devon Levi over the weekend. But the talks never turned into a deal. Buffalo even made Levi available to multiple teams, and Edmonton was one of the teams that expressed interest.
No one really knows yet why it fell apart. Maybe the price was too high, maybe the return didn’t match, or maybe something else got in the way. Edmonton now has to keep searching for goaltending options as the market heats up ahead of the July 1 deadline.
