Ducks and Panthers Swap Rights in Rare Pre-Free Agency Trade

The Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers pulled off an unusual rights trade ahead of NHL free agency on Wednesday.

The Anaheim Ducks and Florida Panthers pulled off an unusual move ahead of NHL free agency, swapping the negotiating rights to two pending unrestricted free agents before Wednesday’s noon ET deadline.

Florida acquired the signing rights to defenseman Radko Gudas, while Anaheim received the rights to forward A.J. Greer in return. The move gives each team an exclusive window to negotiate with their respective targets before they hit the open market.

Gudas, a physical blueliner known for his hard-hitting style, has history with the Panthers organization and was reportedly well-liked during his time in South Florida. The reunion makes natural sense, with Florida hoping to lock him up before other suitors can enter the picture Wednesday. The 36-year-old, a former Ducks captain, had 13 points and led their defense in hits last season. A veteran of 885 NHL games, Gudas also previously helped Florida reach the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.

Greer, meanwhile, figures to receive an offer from Anaheim shortly after the deal was announced. The rugged winger fits the profile of a depth player a rebuilding team like the Ducks would target on a cost-effective deal. They are hoping to sign the 29-year-old after a career-best season. Greer posted 32 points and a +14 rating in 2025-26 and contributed to Florida’s 2025 Stanley Cup run. Known for his size and physical play, he brings experience across multiple NHL teams.

Rights-only trades ahead of free agency are rare across the league, making this a creative bit of roster maneuvering from both front offices. The clock is ticking — Wednesday at noon is the hard deadline for both sides.
