The New Jersey Devils added another talented young forward Tuesday, acquiring Luke Evangelista from the Nashville Predators in exchange for a conditional first-round pick and a second-round selection in the 2028 NHL Draft.
The conditional first-rounder originally belonged to the Calgary Flames and was acquired by New Jersey in the June trade involving defenseman Simon Nemec.
Evangelista Strengthens Devils’ Top Nine
Evangelista is coming off the best season of his young career, recording 12 goals and 44 assists for 56 points in 81 games. Although he is not known as a prolific goal scorer, the 24-year-old winger is an intelligent playmaker who can create opportunities for his linemates.
That skill set should translate well to a Devils lineup featuring elite offensive players such as Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt. Evangelista could potentially play alongside one of New Jersey’s top centres or provide secondary scoring from the third line. His ability to distribute the puck could also earn him an opportunity on the power play.
Selected 42nd overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Evangelista has accumulated 45 goals and 142 points through 253 NHL games. He has already demonstrated that he can produce at a top-six level and should still have room to improve.
The financial commitment is also manageable. Evangelista is entering the final season of a two-year contract carrying a $3 million cap hit. He will remain under team control as a restricted free agent when the deal expires, giving New Jersey the ability to retain him beyond this season.
Predators Continue Building Draft Capital
Trading a productive 24-year-old may appear unusual for Nashville, but general manager Chris MacFarland explained that the organization explored several possibilities to improve its roster moving forward.
The deal gives Nashville seven selections within the first two rounds of the next two drafts. It also creates additional opportunities for some of the promising young wingers within the organization to compete for NHL positions.
For New Jersey, the acquisition carries some risk. Surrendering a first and a second-round pick is a significant price for a player with only one season remaining on his contract, particularly if the conditional first-rounder becomes an early selection. Evangelista will also require a raise if he produces another strong season.
However, the Devils are attempting to compete now, and Evangelista fits both their timeline and offensive identity. If he develops into a consistent 60-point winger, the price could ultimately prove worthwhile.
On the surface, this appears to be a calculated win-now move for New Jersey and a futures-focused decision for Nashville. The eventual value of the conditional first-round pick will likely determine which team comes out ahead.
