Maple Leafs Want Zach Werenski — But There’s a Major Problem

The Toronto Maple Leafs would be a team willing to make a pitch for Zach Werenski, but there’s a problem that stands in the way.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been one of the most active teams this offseason, overhauling their roster under new GM John Chayka. But their biggest potential move — a blockbuster trade for Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski — may be little more than wishful thinking.

Werenski, the reigning Norris Trophy winner, is one of the most coveted players available this offseason. The 28-year-old recorded 22 goals and 59 assists for 81 points in 75 games last season, and is entering the fifth year of his six-year, $57.5 million deal. With Werenski telling the Blue Jackets he’s unlikely to sign an extension, they are expected to move him. Pierre LeBrun reported that Toronto is among the teams he’d accept a trade to.

The problem? What the Maple Leafs can offer may not be enough.

Insider Thinks Blue Jackets Need More Than Knies for Werenski

NHL insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet threw cold water on the idea, saying:

“I don’t even know if building around [Matthew] Knies is enough for Columbus. You would need multiple first-round picks, which Toronto doesn’t have. It’s not getting it done. He’s the best defenseman; he’s a game-changer. When he’s out there, there is a very good chance that the game is dictated by him. There aren’t many guys who can do that.”

Pierre LeBrun, meanwhile, reported that eight to ten teams have already called Columbus, with the Dallas Stars and Philadelphia Flyers among the most serious suitors. Anything Toronto offers would have to compete with what other packages are being put on the table.

The Auston Matthews Issue

Perhaps the most compelling factor connecting Werenski to Toronto is Auston Matthews. The two share a strong bond as longtime Team USA teammates, a relationship that goes back several years. The two are video-game buddies and that familiarity could make Toronto uniquely appealing.

That is, if Matthews remains part of the equation.

If there’s uncertainty about Matthews’ future with the Maple Leafs, that connection quickly loses its pull. In that scenario, it becomes difficult to envision Werenski willingly targeting Toronto as a destination via trade. Without Matthews commiting, the Leafs can’t assume Werenski will. Toronto would lose its strongest recruiting advantage.

Chayka acknowledged the team will be aggressive but disciplined. “There are some players we like. There are some needs we have. We will be aggressive. But we will also make sure we are not doing anything to hurt the future,” he said. If the Werenski trade turns into a bidding war, Toronto likely can’t win it. They probably shouldn’t try, either.
