NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Hellebuyck 300 Wins, Leafs & Flames

In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 8), Hellebuyck gets win 300, Flames win in overtime, Matthews gets 200th multiple-point game.

Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 8). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Stay updated on the latest team performances, trade buzz, and standout player news from around the league. The key story today is Connor Hellebuyck‘s 300th NHL win. However, it’s only one of today’s three key roundup topics.

Connor Hellebuyck Gets His 300th NHL Win.

Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves to lead his Jets to a 5-2 win over the Nashville Predators on home ice. The win was also his 300th NHL win. He now becomes the fastest U.S.-born goaltender to reach the milestone (538 games). The Jets were led by Morgan Barron, Josh Morrissey, Kyle Connor, and Gabriel Vilardi, who all potted goals.

However, Hellebuyck was the player of the night. He got some help from his troops, who played well in front of him. They successfully killed six penalties out of seven called, including one 5-on-3. Nashville got goals from Roman Josi and Filip Forsberg, but they couldn’t score more than two on Hellebuyck.

Jonathan Huberdeau Beats Ducks with Overtime Goal

The Calgary Flames got a game-winning overtime goal from Jonathan Huberdeau to skate home with a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks last night. MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri also scored for the Flames to put the game into overtime. Dustin Wolf was solid in the crease, stopping 26 shots in the win. Huberdeau is having a solid season for the Calgary Flames. He has put up 17 goals, 13 assists, and nine power-play points on the season.

Mason McTavish and Alex Killorn scored for the Ducks to help get their team a point in the overtime loss. In bad news for the Flames, Connor Zary suffered a lower-body injury. There’s no news on the extent of the injury.

Auston Matthews Records His 200th Career Multiple-Point Game

In our third NHL roundup, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ second 3-2 win over the Flyers – this time on the road in Philadelphia – Auston Matthews scored a goal and added an assist to record his 200th career multi-point game. It was Toronto’s fifth straight road win. With the multiple-point game, the Maple Leafs captain became the fourth player in Maple Leafs franchise history to reach that milestone.

Matthews joins Mats Sundin (274 GP), Darryl Sittler (244 GP) and Dave Keon (201 GP). It was his 381st game, which means he has registered multiple points in more than half the games he’s played.
