NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Jets, Sens, Leafs & Oilers
NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Feb 2), Jets beat Capitals in OT, Senators dominate the Wild, Leafs beat Oilers in great game
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (February 2). Each morning, we’ll bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL.
In today’s roundup, the Winnipeg Jets won a back-and-forth game, beating the strong Washington Capitals 5-4 in OT. The Ottawa Senators dominated the Minnesota Wild by a score of 6-0; and, the Toronto Maple Leafs won an exciting 4-3 game on the road against the Edmonton Oilers when Leon Draisaitl‘s late-game goal was disallowed.
Winnipeg Jets Overcome Capitals 5-4 in Overtime Thriller
Alex Ovechkin scored his 877th goal, coming one goal closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record. However, the Winnipeg Jets pulled out an overtime win against the Washington Capitals. The Jets’ Josh Morrissey scored the game-winner to help his team put up its sixth straight win. All-world goalie Connor Hellebuyck earned his fifth straight victory in this high-scoring battle of perhaps the two best teams in the NHL.
Surprising Senators Dominate Wild 6-0: Sanderson Gets Four-Point Night
Jake Sanderson recorded four points (a career-high) in the 6-0 Senators domination of the Minnesota Wild. Rookie goalie Leevi Merilainen earned his third shutout with a 16-save performance against the Wild. It was a great game for the Senators. The team’s power play went 3-for-8 in the dominant win.
As an interesting fact, the Senators have scored three short-handed goals in their past two games. Josh Norris became the second player in franchise history to score a short-handed goal in two straight games, joining Daniel Alfredsson, who did it on Oct. 27 and Nov. 1, 2007.
Maple Leafs Edge Oilers 4-3 After Draisaitl Goal Overturned
The Toronto Maple Leafs ended their three-game losing streak when Mitch Marner scored and added an assist in a 4-3 win over the hot Edmonton Oilers. Joseph Woll was the game’s hero, making 45 saves to steal the win for Toronto. Leon Draisaitl’s potential tying goal was overturned in the final minutes to turn what looked like sure overtime into a Toronto win.
In a surprising fact, Evan Bouchard became only the fifth Oilers defenseman to reach the 50-goal mark. The others include Paul Coffey (209), Charlie Huddy (81), Darnell Nurse (80), and Kevin Lowe (74).
This was an entertaining hockey game that was a blast for the fans. The Maple Leafs finally got some scoring early in the contest, and the Oilers still have a tendency to get off to slower starts. Edmonton has proved they claw back from first-period holes, but it would be a whole lot easier on them if they didn’t have to.
