Jacob Markstrom Out 4-6 Weeks, Likely to Miss Four Nations
Jacob Markstrom will miss 4-6 weeks with an injury, keeping him out of several NHL games and the Four Nations Tournament.
The New Jersey Devils have announced that goaltender Jacob Markstrom will be sidelined for four to six weeks due to an MCL sprain sustained during Wednesday’s game against the Boston Bruins. The injury occurred in the second period when Markstrom appeared to twist awkwardly while making a save, leaving him barely able to skate off the ice under his own power. He did not return to the bench, and Jake Allen filled in for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe said after the game Markstrom “would miss some time,” and that was accurate. This timeline isn’t good news for the Devils, but it’s not devastating. It’s bad for Team Sweden, which likely won’t have access to Markstrom for the Four Nations Tournament.
Following imaging on Thursday, the Devils confirmed the extent of Markstrom’s injury. Markstrom, who was set to represent Team Sweden in the 2025 Four Nations Face-Off, is now unlikely to participate in the international tournament.
With Linus Ullmark a maybe for The Four Nations as well, Team Sweden is potentially taking a huge hit to their goaltending.
The Devils Will Have to Manage Without Markstrom
The good news for the Devils is that the Four Nations falls inside the timeline of Markstrom’s injury, meaning it will limit the number of NHL games he’ll miss. The Devils are expected to rely heavily on Jake Allen and their depth in goal during what could be a critical stretch.
Markstrom’s injury isn’t good news. That said, if there’s a silver lining, the Devils initially thought it was going to be much worse.
