Brad Marchand Could Hit Trade Market: “All Bets Off”, Says Exec
One NHL executive says “all bets are off” as it pertains to Brad Marchand possibly being traded by the Boston Bruins.
When asked if the Bruins should trade their last remaining Stanley Cup champion as part of their reconstruction, Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic cited an NHL as having responded, “If they think it’ll help the team.” It was then said, “All bets are off.” when asked if Boston might actually trade Brad Marchand.
Marchand finds himself at a career crossroads. There is talk the Bruins are seriously considering moving him. He has an 8-team no-trade clause, which makes him moveable. And, with 966 career points, the 36-year-old captain is on pace to surpass 1,000 early in the 2025-26 season. He could offer a contender leadership and proven production. And, with the team struggling this season, questions loom about his future with the organization.
The Bruins sit in third place in the Atlantic Division with 54 points. They’ve been all over the map this season, often called sellers and sometimes called potential deadline buyers. The Bruins might be looking at all of their options, from contending to retooling. Marchand, a pending UFA wants to remain a Bruin for life, but an extension hasn’t been worked out.
Marchand and the Bruins Are Both Going in the Wrong Direction
Marchand’s 37 points place him second in team scoring behind David Pastrnak. But that’s a lower pace than typical, and the team’s declining performance has sparked speculation about whether general manager Don Sweeney might trade the captain to kickstart a roster overhaul.
Trading Marchand would be a monumental decision, but there are signs everywhere that this relationship could be coming to an end. He’s been benched at times by his coach, and there has been rumored drama between Marchand and Pastrnak (which both players denied).
A trade could net the Bruins a serious return while offering Marchand a chance to chase another Stanley Cup. Shinzawa said he was told by an agent that a second-round pick and a young, team-controlled player could be the return. Shinzawa then writes, “The Bruins would have to determine, then, whether such a package would be worth the fallout of trading one of the club’s best players of all time.”
No Brad Marchand Trade Decision is Coming Right Away
There’s still time for the Bruins to shift their thinking. With six weeks until the March 7 trade deadline approaches, Boston is still in the playoff mix. Extension talks between Marchand and the Bruins could also take a positive turn.
This is unlikely to be a decision that gets made imminently. Rumors of the Bruins being a darkhorse team in J.T. Miller trade talks suggest they’ll go down to the wire in determining which direction their team is headed this season.
