Who Are the NHL’s Best Goalies Right Now?

Recently, the NHL ranked its top fantasy goalies. How did this match up against the regular season? What makes these goalies so good?

Who are the NHL’s best goalies this season? Recently, NHL.com ranked the top fantasy goalies in 2024-25. The results were no surprise. Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets), Logan Thompson (Washington Capitals), and Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay Lightning) were the top three.

For those who don’t follow fantasy hockey, these rankings are based on factors like past performance, team support, and anticipated start volume. However, fantasy or not, these rankings give “regular” hockey fans some insight into who can be expected to perform well on the ice during NHL games.

Looking at the Top Three Goalie Picks

Not surprisingly, Connor Hellebuyck is ranked No. 1. He remains the top choice because he’s consistent. Hellebuyck can post solid stats for a Jets team that leans on him heavily. He goes game after game, with nary a blink of an eye.

Logan Thompson, who just turned his stellar play into a huge contract, was ranked No. 2 by NHL.com. He’s rising quickly after an impressive 2024 start. His play benefits from a strong Capitals defense and team structure in Washington. Coach Spencer Carbery could be the Jack Adams Trophy winner, and the entire team is having a stellar season.

Third, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy is just behind the first two goalies. Although the Lightning are not having as good a season as expected, Vasilevskiy can always be counted on to have solid outings for his team. He could be close to the best high-pressure goalie in the NHL.

Stuart Skinner and Andrei Vasilevskiy are solid goalies.

Other NHL Goalies of Note: Blackwood, Wolf & Woll

As a sleeper, Mackenzie Blackwood is rising in the ranks. NHL.com ranked him at No. 8 right now. Since he arrived from the San Jose Sharks a month ago, his play helped the Colorado Avalanche turn their season around.

While Dustin Wolf (Calgary Flames) and Joseph Woll (Toronto Maple Leafs) are promising younger talents. Wolf is playing well and could be a strong Calder Candidate. He’s not the prototypical goalie these days (they tend to be 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds). Wolf is just a regular-sized player. But he’s good and is keeping his Flames in the postseason hunt.

Woll is having a solid season but isn’t doing as well as Wolf. The Edmonton Oilers Stuart Skinner is ranked No. 11. His stock could rise if his team goes on a heater as the regular season ends. He came close to helping the Oilers win last season’s Stanley Cup. Could he reprise that situation?
