NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Flames, Canadiens & Maple Leafs
NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 29), Flames lose to Capitals and Thompson, Canadiens to face Fleury, Maple Leafs Matthews is red hot.
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 29). Each morning, we’ll bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. Today’s roundup shares just how strong goalie Logan Thompson‘s play has been for the Washington Capitals. He won again last night against the Calgary Flames. Second, Marc-Andre Fleury looks ahead to what might be his final game in Montreal. Finally, I’ll look at how well Auston Matthews has been playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Can his team go on a longer Stanley Cup run this postseason?
Logan Thompson Earning His Contract as Capitals Beat Flames
The Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson just scored a new contract. Last night, he earned a 32-save 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames. That improves his record to a scalding 15-1-2 since Nov. 25. Pierre-Luc Dubois, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas scored for Washington. Blake Coleman’s power-play goal wasn’t nearly enough, and the Flames lost their second straight.
Marc-Andre Fleury Nears His Final Game in Montreal
Marc-Andre Fleury still has fire in his belly. His competitive spirit has not diminished despite being 40 years old. He’s on a farewell tour as he readies to retire, and he’ll soon likely play his final game in Montreal against the Canadiens, surrounded by family. Although his Minnesota Wild are not often in the Stanley Cup conversation, Fleury hopes for a final run at the Cup. He’s been one of the greatest recent NHL goalies, and a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame awaits.
He said to NHL.com, “At 40 years old, I sometimes feel like a guy playing in a beer league. But I absolutely want to show that, despite my age, I can still beat goalies in their twenties. I’m still as competitive as ever.”

Auston Matthews Heating Up as Maple Leafs Push for Playoffs
The Toronto Maple Leafs Auston Matthews is back to form after an injury scare. While he missed too much time to beat Leon Draisaitl this season, he is on pace for another 40-goal season. However, the focus in Toronto is on a Stanley Cup run. Led by Matthews’ consistency, 200-foot game, and goal-scoring ability, the team feels it has improved its defense and coaching to help it take a long playoff journey. Does it?

Leafs have a very good 3rd center in Domi why they play Holmberg at center instead is very puzzling as he has no offensive ability Holmberg should be a 4th liner.
