Tough Ducks D-Man Pegged “Wild Card” in Rumored Oilers Trade
An Edmonton Journal scribe wonders if an insider has been talking about the Ducks when he hints at a possible trade for the Oilers.
The Edmonton Oilers’ ongoing quest to upgrade their blue line has reignited trade speculation, with Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer (h/t David Staples of the Edmonton Journal) always eager to get Oilers Nation buzzing. He is once again hinting at a potential move for a defenseman. Stauffer suggested the target could be a left-shot defenseman capable of playing the right side, possessing term on their contract, and fitting the team’s need for mobility and offensive support from the back end.
Staples tried to deduce who Stauffer was talking about — as he’s been very mysterious in his proclamations — and one name that fits this profile is Cam Fowler of the Anaheim Ducks.
Fowler, a seasoned NHL veteran with over 15 seasons under his belt, has one year remaining on his $6.5 million contract. Known for his intelligence and puck-moving abilities, Fowler has survived the purge on the Ducks’ blue line over the years. However, his No-Trade Clause, limiting him to four trade destinations, could be a hurdle. The good news is that Oilers GM Stan Bowman has noted that players are increasingly willing to waive such clauses to join the Oilers.
Fowler’s experience and ability to handle significant ice time make him an attractive option. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Ducks seem eager to move Fowler, as he was part of the talks that sent Jacob Trouba to Anaheim, but the Rangers didn’t bite. Fowler might be available at a discount.
Is There Another Trade Option from the Ducks?
Staples mentions that another intriguing candidate is Radko Gudas, also from Anaheim. Gudas brings a different skill set—a ferocious, shutdown presence on the back end. With one year left on his $4 million contract and an 18:56 average ice time this season, Gudas could add valuable physicality and depth to Edmonton’s blue line. While he’s more suited for a third-pairing role, his playoff experience and aggressive playstyle could prove invaluable during a deep postseason run.

With the Oilers patient but aware of the potential need for an upgrade, both Fowler and Gudas present fascinating options. It’s not clear the Ducks are the team Stauffer was referring to when he mentioned the trade rumors again, but it makes sense.
If the Oilers want a puck-mover who is smart and can play in a variety of situations, Fowler could work and the Ducks would retain salary. If Edmonton wants an imposing hammer, Gudas is their guy.
It’s not clear the Ducks are willing to trade Gudas. They seem to like the idea of a wall on the blue line in Gudas and Jacob Trouba. But, as they veer further away from the playoffs, it’s not clear who might shake loose if GM Pat Verbeek feels like selling.
