NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 31), Canadiens lose to Marc-Andre Fleury, Flames trade Kuzmeno, Senators beat Capitals in OT
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 31). Each morning, we’ll bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL.
In today’s roundup, it couldn’t have been a better outcome for Marc-Andre Fleury, who went into Montreal and threw a shutout against his hometown Canadiens. Second, Andrei Kuzmenko was involved in a trade (with others) from the Calgary Flames to the Philadelphia Flyers. Finally, although Alex Ovechkin got one goal closer to Wayne Gretzky‘s record, the Ottawa Senators won in overtime when Thomas Chabot scored on his birthday.
Fleury’s Historic Shutout Leads Wild to 4-0 Win Over Canadiens
The outstanding Marc-Andre Fleury went into his hometown of Montreal last night and recorded his 76th NHL shutout. Fleury made 19 saves in what could be his final game in Montreal, earning a 4-0 win for the Minnesota Wild. The game was a historic moment for Fleury. He became the first goalie to record a shutout as a teenager and at over 40.
For Montreal, it was the first time the team struggled in front of rookie goalie Jakub Dobes. He made 23 saves but suffered his first regulation loss in seven starts. The Canadiens had been playing well but dropped to 0-3-1 in their last four games.
Andrei Kuzmenko: Traded to Flyers for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee
Andrei Kuzmenko was traded with Jakob Pelletier and draft picks from the Calgary Flames to the Philadelphia Flyers. Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee came back to Calgary. The 28-year-old Kuzmenio is in the final year of his two-year, $11 million contract and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. Frost and Farabee will provide the Flames with added offensive depth, with Frost bringing playmaking skills and Farabee adding grit and scoring.
Alex Ovechkin Scores 876th Goal, Senators Still Win 5-4 in OT.
Alex Ovechkin got one closer when he scored his 876th goal last night against the Ottawa Senators. However, the Senators still prevailed in overtime by a score of 5-4. Ovechkin’s score brings him within 19 goals of Wayne Gretzky’s record. Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot scored the game-winning goal on his birthday to lift his Senators to the win. He’s the first player in Senators history to score a game-winner on his birthday. [Interestingly, someone keeps track of these curious statistics.]
