NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Jets, Habs & Logan Thompson
In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 15), Jets dominate Canucks, Canadiens win again, Logan Thompson’s amazing season
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 15). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In today’s roundup, two Canadian teams – the Winnipeg Jets and the Montreal Canadiens each won last night. But perhaps the bigger story is Logan Thompson‘s season in the Washington Capitals crease. You can read more below.
Dach Leads Canadiens to 5-3 Win Over Utah
The Montreal Canadiens are on a roll. Last night, the team won again by a score of 5-3, with Kirby Dach scoring twice to lift the Canadiens to yet another win. Mike Matheson and Cole Caufield also scored and added an assist in the win. The Canadiens were aided by Utah’s goalie Karel Vejmelka‘s struggles in net. He only made 21 saves in 27 shots for the loss.
Patrik Laine scored his 10th of the season. Interestingly, it was his first even-strength goal after nine straight power-play goals. It was also his 400th career point.
Kyle Connor’s Hat Trick Leads Jets to 6-1 Win Over Canucks
The Winnipeg Jets won again. Kyle Connor scored a natural hat trick in the first period, getting the Jets off to a fast start in their dominating win over their Canadian rivals. Mark Scheifele, Nino Niederreiter, and Neal Pionk scored a goal and assisted in last night’s beatdown.
Canucks’ goalie Kevin Lankinen, who recently put up a shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs, gave up six goals on 33 shots as Vancouver dropped its fifth game out of the last six.
Logan Thompson Shuts Out Ducks in Capitals’ 3-0 Victory
In our final roundup, Logan Thompson recorded 19 saves, earning his first shutout as a Capital and the fifth of his career against the Anaheim Ducks. After moving from the Vegas Golden Knights, Thompson is having a fantastic first season with the Capitals. He’s played 24 games, achieving a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.23 and a save percentage of 0.921. Thompson has allowed only 53 goals all season and has put together a stellar record of 19-2-3, recording three shutouts.

His consistent play has contributed significantly to his team’s defensive strength this season. The Capitals are one of the season’s surprises, with a 29-10-5 record. There’s more to talk about than Alex Ovechkin‘s chase of Wayne Gretzky‘s record in the US capital city.
