Maple Leafs Forward Seeking Bigger Role as Trade Talk Resurfaces

Explore the latest on the Nick Robertson trade rumors and whether a fresh start may benefit the talented Maple Leafs forward.

Nick Robertson’s name is back in the trade rumour mill. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger on Insider Trading, the 24-year-old Toronto Maple Leafs forward is hoping for a larger role and more opportunities in the NHL. General manager Brad Treliving has reportedly spoken with a few clubs that may have interest, hinting that “it might be time to give him a fresh start somewhere else.”

Despite showing flashes of the ability to be a top-six scorer and being clearly blessed with some offensive skill, Robertson has struggled to secure a consistent spot in Toronto’s lineup. Meanwhile, Easton Cowan has come in and impressed in two games on the team’s top line, getting praise for his work effort and the way he plays the game. This is not to say Cowan hasn’t earned the opportunity or that Robertson is unhappy with the rookie. However, Robertson has spent years trying to earn the same praise, rarely getting anything but inconsistent ice time and regular healthy scratches.

This season, the Leafs’ deep forward group has left him fighting for ice time in the bottom six, where his speed and effort often stand out — but not always enough to warrant a promotion.

With one assist in four games, Robertson has played relatively well so far this season. Still, the lack of consistent usage and production may be prompting both player and team to consider other options.

It’s not the first time Robertson’s future has been in question. Previous reports suggested the Leafs’ asking price may have been too high or that other teams’ interest was limited. With trade discussions reportedly renewed, this could finally be the moment a change of scenery materializes.
