Jonathan Quick Expected to Sign Free Agent Deal with New York Rangers

Goaltender Jonathan Quick is expected to sign free agency deal with the New York Rangers on July 1.

Per a report first broken by Kevin Weekes, goaltender Jonathan Quick is expected to sign with the New York Rangers at the opening of free agency. Quick, a highly accomplished goaltender is not the netminder he once was, but he could be a serviceable backup to superstar goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

Quick has had an impressive career in the NHL. With a career record of 375-277-84, a goals-against average (GAA) of 2.47, and a save percentage (SV%) of .911, Quick has established himself as a reliable and skilled netminder. He was not great last year and moved from the Los Angeles Kings to the Golden Knights as the Kings dumped him for Joonas Korpisalo, but during the 2021-22 season, Quick maintained solid performance with a 2.59 GAA and a .910 SV%. He played a crucial role for the Los Angeles Kings in a closely contested series against the Edmonton Oilers, despite eventually falling short. That wasn’t all that long ago.

Quick’s most notable achievements came with the Kings, where he backstopped the team to Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. However, Rangers fans may have mixed feelings about his success, as his second Cup win came at the expense of their beloved team and Henrik Lundqvist. Quick also recently won a championship as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, although he did not see action during the playoffs.

Quick will replace Jaroslav Halak, who will become a free agent after a one-year deal with the team. There was talk that the Rangers and Halak were talking about an extension, but things must have fallen apart in that regard. The terms of Quick’s contract with the Rangers are yet to be determined, but his cost shouldn’t be terribly high and his experience and leadership will undoubtedly be valuable for the young and talented Rangers roster, particularly for emerging star Igor Shesterkin.

Overall, Quick’s track record of success, championship experience, and dedication to his craft make him a valuable addition to the New York Rangers.
