Insider Confirms Hurdle as Flames Try to Trade for Cozens
The Calgary Flames remain interested in a Dylan Cozens trade, but insider Pierre LeBrun says there are a couple of hurdles to overcome.
The Calgary Flames have a strong interest in acquiring Buffalo Sabres forward Dylan Cozens, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. During Tuesday’s Early Trading report, LeBrun explained that the Flames aren’t done trying to make moves, and they’ve had an eye on Cozens — a right-shot center — for some time. However, there is a slight issue.
While in the midst of a playoff race, Calgary remains committed to its long-term vision. They’ll add, but they’re not looking at rentals or short-term fixes. It’s one of the reasons Cozens remains so appealing.
LeBrun reports that the Flames’ pursuit of Cozens has not wavered, even after their recent additions of Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee. However, pulling off a deal for the 23-year-old center won’t be easy. Buffalo general manager Kevyn Adams is reportedly not actively shopping Cozens, but given the Sabres’ struggles this season, he is “taking calls.”. LeBrun noted, “Adams is taking calls cuz Buffalo’s in the last place, and he has to take calls.” But, he knows what he wants in return.
Any trade involving Cozens would likely require a return of established players rather than a package centered around future assets.
Can the Flames Come Up With That Kind of Offer?
Cozens, who signed a long-term extension with Buffalo, remains a key part of their core. If the Sabres do entertain a move, they want an “apples to apples” trade. That means Calgary has to give a young player back who is under contract, (or is willing to sign). For a team looking to retain good, young assets, Conroy isn’t looking to give those players back.
The Flames aren’t moving pieces of their core. They’re also unlikely to give up on young prospects like Matt Coronato, Connor Zary, or Yegor Sharangovich.
With the NHL trade deadline approaching, Calgary’s pursuit of Cozens will be a situation to watch. Conroy wants to add to reward his team and give them the best chance to make the postseason. However, he’s not willing to hurt the retooling game plan.
If the Flames can put together an enticing offer, they could add a young forward with a ton of upside who fits exactly what they’re looking for. However, the Sabres want to win this trade. That’s a challenge the Flames would have to overcome.
