Ex-NHL Goalie Casts Doubt on Thatcher Demko’s Playing Status

Former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan asked why Thatcher Demko is healthy enough to be a backup, but not play games?

A lot of NHL fans are curious what is going on with Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko. Technically, he has been dressing for the team but not starting. The Canucks took on the Columbus Blue Jackets and Tampa Bay Lightning, and he was on the bench for both games.

Rick Dhaliwal reports on Tuesday, “Would not be surprised if Demko makes his debut tonight.”

McLennan Questions Demko’s Status

Former NHL goalie Jamie McLennan was a guest on the Donnie and Dhali podcast and questioned what is going on. McLennan appeared confused as to why Demko had not started a game yet. But was deemed healthy enough to dress.

“I was going to ask you questions, going, What the he– is going on  here?'” He said, “There’s a saying that if you’re healthy enough to wear a jersey. That means you are available to play that night.”

McLennan then joked that he is not “Jamie McLennan; he is Thatcher Demko,” which was a shot at his own career. Which was spent mainly as a backup goalie.

He gave Kevin Lankinen his props for playing well this season. But mentioned, “I thought the Columbus start would have been a perfect start for him.”

He went on to wrap up his thoughts by saying, “I don’t know.” He continued, “I don’t know what they are waiting for. Obviously, I’m not privy to it, but something is not right!”

When Will Demko Start?

Unfortunately, no one seems to be privy to the information regarding the status of Demko. It is even more confusing when a former NHL goalie is confused about why he is backing up rather than starting. Could it be mental? Is he just not ready to start? Or is the team just waiting for the perfect game to start him? Only those behind closed doors know that information. This means Canucks fans are left waiting for the answer as to what is wrong with their starting goalie.

The Canucks play the St. Louis Blues tomorrow, followed by the Florida Panthers on Thursday. To round out the week, they play the Boston Bruins on Saturday. It will be interesting to see if Demko does get one of those three starts this week.
