The St. Louis Blues signed forward Brayden Schenn to an eight-year, $52 million extension on Friday.
Elliotte Friedman had reported earlier in the week that the Blues were looking to take a serious run and getting Schenn extended and they’ve successfully done so, locking up a big piece of their offense for the forseeable future. The deal, which will run through the 2027-28 season, carries an average annual value of $6.5 million.
Schenn was set to become an unrestricted free agent and at 28 year sold is currently playing the last year of his current four-year, $20.5 million contract. He was acquired in a trade from the Philadelphia Flyers in 2016 and immediately found new life with the Blues after the move. He was scheduled to become to an unrestricted free agent in July, likely to be one of the more coveted free agent wingers.
Overall, Schenn has appeared in 588 career regular-season games, including 79 or more in five of the last six campaigns. He’s produced 372 points (154 goals, 218 assists) during the regular season, as well as 26 points (eight goals, 18 assists) in 50 career postseason games.
What’s Next for St. Louis?
We had listed Schenn in our top-nine tradeable players because we felt the Blues would focus on re-signing captain and stud defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. It will be interesting to see if there are any complications there now.

Blues general manager Doug Armstrong has to get creative now and that could mean other moves for the team prior to July 1.
