Utah Hockey Club Using Fan Vote for 3 Final Team Names

Fans are being told they can now vote on three possible names for the Utah Hockey Club by attending one of four games in the coming weeks.

The Utah Hockey Club is hard at work trying to officially come up with a team name. After abandoning the Yeti name because of trademark issues, they are taking it to a fan vote. Fans attending the next four home games at Delta Center will have the exclusive chance to vote on one of three final name options: Utah Hockey Club, Utah Mammoth, or Utah Wasatch.

Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) has actively involved fans in the naming process, hoping to come with a name the community and fan base will really love. The survey process began last spring, with fans initially submitting name ideas via social media. That first round produced 20 potential names, later narrowed to six, with over 750,000 votes cast along the way.

For this crucial next round, not only will fans be selecting a name, but they will also see accompanying logos and branding treatments. Essentially, they’ll get to see what the jerseys and hats and other merchandise they’ll be buying will look like.

But, you can only vote if you attend one of the following four home games:

  • Wednesday, Jan. 29 vs. Pittsburgh
  • Friday, Jan. 31 vs. Columbus
  • Sunday, Feb. 2 vs. St. Louis
  • Tuesday, Feb. 4 vs. Philadelphia

SEG staff will be present throughout the arena to assist fans in casting their votes via Qualtrics, ensuring a fair and secure process. As for the “Yeti,” name, the hockey club couldn’t find a way to work around the trademark issues it had with YETI Coolers, LLC. It was noted there was too much confusion so they’ve given up on that name.

Utah Hockey Club and Utah Mammoth were among the top six in the previous round, while Utah Wasatch is a new option inspired by the Wasatch Mountains and the legend of a mythical snow creature.
