Teams Putting Canucks to Task in Likely Meager Miller Trade

The Vancouver Canucks are being low-balled in trade offers for J.T. Miller. What will they do? Take a lesser return, or hold out?

With six weeks until the NHL trade deadline, talk of a potential J.T. Miller trade is still front-page news. The latest reports are that multiple teams, including the New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and possibly the New Jersey Devils, are reportedly expressing interest in the Vancouver Canucks forward. However, a new report from Nick Kypreos suggests that these teams are trying to outwait the Canucks and take advantage of a “buy-low” opportunity.

The Canucks Aren’t Getting the Offers They Want

Canucks President Jim Rutherford is aggressive, and the team is trying to make a move here. That said, other NHL clubs know the situation Vancouver is in. No one is stepping up to give fair value for Miller, and the Canucks face a challenging situation.

Do they move this problem on and get a lower value in return than they want? Or, do they wait, risking their season but maximizing the return?

Kypreos talked with Rick Dhaliwal on Friday and said, “Everybody wants to buy low.” He added, “They’re getting nickel and dimed right now..”

Teams are trying to take advantage of a Canucks team that is desperate to resolve this issue. They’re betting Rutherford and GM Patrik Allvin will take a lower-than-market-value offer. It’s smart asset management, but it leaves the Canucks with a dilemma.

Miller Can Be Traded, But What Can the Canucks Get?

It has already been reported that the Rangers told the Canucks they weren’t willing to take Miller’s contract in totality. They want to Canucks to retain or take money back in the deal. As is stands, these two teams no longer have a trade in the works.

The Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils are interested, but they’re not willing to part with key roster pieces, according to reports. If they do, they want to choose who they move, and the Canucks have to be aware they may not get an impact player back.

Miller is a great player when engaged. Teams know this, so there is interest. But, no team is willing to pay full price. Canucks management faces a difficult decision: hold out for a fair deal or risk losing leverage as the deadline draws nearer.

This could all lead to the Canucks retaining the forward until the offseason.
