NHL Trade Talk Recap: Maple Leafs Job, Oilers Goalie & Senators Captain
NHL Trade Talk recap. What’s happening with Sundin of the Maple Leafs, Jarry of the Oilers & Tkachuk of the Senators?
In this edition of NHL Trade Talk Recap, there are three different vibes in the air today. Toronto is possibly bringing a legend back to actually do work, Edmonton flipped their goalie in a must-win game, and Brady Tkachuk is sitting in an awkward “stay or go” space. Are fans and family pulling in different ways?
If Mats Sundin is actually coming back with the Maple Leafs, it should be more than a photo op. Suddenly, Tristan Jarry could be the Oilers’ Hail Mary for Game 4, and how Tkachuk’s life and his playoff slump have the rumour mill buzzing about a fresh start.

Don’t Make Sundin a Prop — Give Him a Real Job with the Leafs
Toronto’s history is everywhere, but half the time it just looks like decoration. If Mats Sundin’s actually coming back, don’t just turn it into a ceremonial photo op. Give him a legit role. He gave the city a chunk of his life; if he moves back, make it count in the room and on the roster side.
Look at Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, and Daniel Alfredsson. Those guys didn’t just collect applause; they helped run teams, and that mattered. Young players notice when legends are in the building, making real calls, not just waving from a suite. That kind of involvement sells culture and belonging, and culture is now a real recruiting tool.
If Sundin is helping with drafts, player development, or mentoring young players in the AHL, suddenly Toronto’s history becomes muscle, not museum stuff. That’s the kind of move that might keep stars around for the long haul.

Oilers Roll the Dice and Start Jarry — Smart Move or Panic Button?
Jim Matheson’s not shocked the Oilers were eyeing Tristan Jarry for Game 4, and honestly, sometimes a goalie swap shakes things loose. The gamble didn’t pay off on Sunday night as the Oilers went down 3-1 in their series with the Ducks, but it wasn’t Jarry’s fault.

However, Matheson’s reasoning behind Jarry’s return (the Skinner-for-Jarry trade as the reason to throw him in) felt like shaky logic. You don’t roll someone out in a must-win spot just to validate a deadline move. That was a regular-season bet that should’ve been sorted earlier. This isn’t about saving face for management; it’s about putting the best guy in net to give the team a chance.
Do the Oilers go back to Ingram for Game 5? Do they stick with Jarry after he played well in Game 4 but Edmonton lost on a controversial call in overtime?

Love the Guy, But the Vibe’s Off — Where Does Brady Tkachuk Go From Here?
It’s hard not to cheer for Brady. He’s all grit, made captain young, and plays like he’s allergic to backing down. Trouble is, the spark between him and Ottawa fans has cooled a bit, and it didn’t happen overnight.

Part of it was the Olympics — seeing him in Team USA gear in a Canadian market rubbed folks the wrong way, and a few weirdly reported quotes didn’t help his standing with the crowd. Then, in the playoffs, he had no points in four games and took some silly penalties. Fans’ patience runs thin.
Would a change of scenery shock anyone? He’s got options, and with a baby on the way and a home in New Jersey, the lure of a U.S. team makes sense. Fans still want him to succeed in Ottawa, but if the chemistry’s gone, a fresh start might be best for both sides.
