It’s hard not to love Brady Tkachuk as a player. He’s a throwback, all grit and grind, made captain so young and wore that “do-not-back-down” thing like it was part of his DNA. He’s given everything out there: hit body, chase pucks, stir the pot when needed.

He’s one of those guys you root for even when he’s chirping the refs. The trouble is that lately, the vibe between him and Ottawa fans has felt off. It hasn’t happened overnight, but for me it’s been creeping in.

Watching Tkachuk Play for Team USA Was Telling

A big part of it, weirdly, comes down to the Olympics. Watching him cheer and play for Team USA in a Canadian hockey hotbed didn’t sit right with a lot of people here. Some fans thought he was over the top. You can be proud of your country and still be Canadian in this market, but that visual — the red, white, and blue in front of Canadian crowds. His overzealous American patriotism when speaking to US media felt jarring.

Add to that a couple of moments where stuff was reported as coming from him, and then he kinda walked it back or said something different later. Canadian fans started to tilt their heads. Maybe he’s honest, and the media’s twisting things. Perhaps it was a smear. Or, maybe he’s just human and messes up his words. Either way, I felt that it muddied his relationship.

During the Recent Postseason, Tkachuk Simply Didn’t Play Well

Then there’s the on-ice slump and penalties at the worst times. The playoffs this year were brutal: no points in four games, a minus rating that stings, and a couple of silly penalties that didn’t help the team. It’s hard for fans to separate the two — when their captain isn’t producing and looks off, patience thins fast.

And in a hockey town that eats narratives alive, the Tkachuk chatter turns to trade rumours almost instantly. Would it shock anyone if Brady asked for a change of scenery? Not really. He’s got options. He’s a difference-maker, and big-market teams in the U.S. would pay attention. Even a reunion possibility with his brother in Florida. For some fans, that might be the clean break everyone needs.

Do All Senators Fans Want Him to Leave? Not Really

Do all Ottawa fans want him gone? I liked the Brady who barrels through defenders, sparks the arena, and carries everyone with him. But what if the chemistry’s really fraying between him, the fanbase, and maybe even the front office?

Sometimes, a fresh start is the best thing for both sides. Let’s hope he gets healthy, sorts the off-ice noise, and comes back swinging. If not, I won’t hate the guy for trying to find a place where he feels at home.
