NHL Weekend Rumors: Tkachuk Trade, Leafs GM, McDavid’s Injury

In this weekend’s NHL rumors: How bad is McDavid’s injury? Is Brady Tkachuk being traded? And what’s the latest on the Maple Leafs GM search?

In today’s NHL weekend rumors, now that they’ve been eliminated from the playoffs, the Ottawa Senators could be exploring a shocking blockbuster involving Brady Tkachuk. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to narrow their management search, the Buffalo Sabres face a big decision on Alex Tuch, and several teams across the league are weighing major offseason moves.

Senators Could Explore Blockbuster with Brady Tkachuk

One of the biggest talking points comes out of Ottawa, where David Pagnotta suggested the Senators could at least explore the idea of trading captain Brady Tkachuk this summer. While nothing is imminent, even the possibility is a big story.

Pagnotta said:

“I think there’s a good chance the Sens explore trading Brady Tkachuk this summer. And it’s for a variety of reasons, and I don’t think it’s exclusively to do with the fact that he plays in Ottawa. I think there are different parameters for him that have factored into perhaps that personal decision.”

Tkachuk remains the face of the franchise and a key emotional leader, meaning any such move would require a massive return. Around the league, teams will undoubtedly monitor the situation closely if the Senators decide to seriously entertain offers.

Maple Leafs Zeroing In on Front Office Changes

The Maple Leafs’ front office search continues to take shape, with several notable names emerging as candidates. According to Elliotte Friedman and others, the organization appears to be leaning toward John Chayka, with Scott White also firmly in the mix. Meanwhile, there doesn’t appear to be much traction regarding Doug Armstrong, even though the Blues announced this week that Alex Steen would be the team’s next general manager.

Beyond the GM role, the Leafs have cast a wide net, reportedly contacting around 20 candidates as they reshape their leadership group. Jason Spezza has reportedly declined the opportunity to interview; Chris Pronger has confirmed he has not interviewed; and Mats Sundin has also expressed willingness to return in a meaningful role.

Sabres Facing Decision on Alex Tuch

In Buffalo, their series with the Boston Bruins is ongoing, but there’s also behind-the-scenes talk about Alex Tuch. Friedman noted that the Sabres will eventually have to make a call on the forward, especially if he performs well during this playoff appearance. He has four points in three games thus far.

Letting a player of Tuch’s caliber walk would be difficult to justify, and there is growing speculation about outside interest. Pagnotta indicated the Chicago Blackhawks could view Tuch as a primary target if he reaches the open market.

League-Wide Buzz: Trades, Picks, and Big Swings

Elsewhere around the NHL, several teams are positioning themselves for impactful offseason moves. The Florida Panthers could consider moving their 2026 first-round pick if they’re not sold on the available talent, while the Detroit Red Wings met with the media and hinted there were big moves potentially coming.

The Canucks continue their GM search and have requested interviews with several big names.

There is also concern in Edmonton, where it seems clear Connor McDavid is dealing with something and isn’t 100 percent. He says he’s fine, and there are moments in games where he has speed bursts that would suggest he’s not injured. That said, he’s been turnover-prone and doesn’t look quite right.
