NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup: Canadiens, Oilers, Leafs All Win
In our NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (Jan 16), Canadiens Dobes sets NHL record in win, Oilers come from behind, Nylander scores twice in win
Welcome to today’s NHL Trade Talk Morning Roundup (January 17). Each morning, we will bring you three key NHL stories. Here, you can stay updated on the latest team wins and losses, trade talk, and player news from around the NHL. In today’s roundup, three Canadian-based teams – the Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Montreal Canadiens- came from behind to win their games. Perhaps the biggest news is the Canadiens’ continued success as they beat a tough Dallas Stars team. In that game, what NHL record did Habs’ goalie Jakub Dobes tie?
Oilers Come from Behind to Beat Avalanche 4-3
In a game last night on the road, the Edmonton Oilers came back from a three-goal deficit to skate away with a 4-3 win over a strong Colorado Avalanche team. Connor McDavid scored and racked up an assist in the comeback. Evan Bouchard sealed the win with his third-period goal. Interestingly, a look at the Oilers’ time on the ice showed that several of the top-six forwards played over 24 minutes.
For the Avalanche, Nathan MacKinnon’s two goals were not enough. His Avalanche team could not stem the Oilers’ firepower as the game entered the second and third periods. How good is McDavid? He scored his 20th goal of the season and became the fifth player in franchise history with nine straight 20-goal seasons. The others include Jari Kurri (10), Mark Messier (10), Wayne Gretzky (9) and Leon Draisaitl (9).
Montreal Stays Hot to Beat Dallas 3-1 Dobes Wins Again

The Montreal Canadiens are beyond hot. They rallied back to win again, beating a tough Dallas Stars team by a score of 3-1. Jakub Dobes won again, putting up 32 saves in the Canadiens’ win. Juraj Slafkovsky, Alex Newhook, and Joel Armia scored to lift their team from behind. Jason Robertson’s early goal had given the Stars a 1-0 lead. But they could not hold it.
In an odd statistic, Dobes and Charlie Lindgren of the Washington Capitals became the only goalies in NHL history to win their first four NHL starts, with all of them being on the road.
Marner’s Great Stretch Pass Leads to Nylander’s Overtime Game-Winner
William Nylander returned to form, scoring twice, including an overtime winner, to help lead his Toronto Maple Leafs rally past the New Jersey Devils by a score of 4-3. Auston Matthews also potted two goals, including the third-period game-tying goal. The Maple Leafs looked like they were on their way to a fourth straight loss but turned things around in the comeback win.
Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier scored for the Devils, but late Devils breakdowns rendered Markstrom’s 37 saves for naught. Matthew Knies might have suffered an injury in a borderline play, but he returned for the third period. Whew, for Maple Leafs fans.
