Ex-Oiler Causes Stir for Swedish Team HV71 with Sudden Retirement
Former Edmonton Oilers forward Noah Philp has retired from hockey, walking away from his two-year contract with HV71.
Noah Philp is retiring from hockey. The former Edmonton Oilers and Carolina Hurricanes forward is quitting after signing a two-year deal with HV71 of the Swedish Elite League.
He noted in an apology statement:
“I really want to apologize to HV71 and all involved regarding the timing of my decision, but I have decided to stop playing hockey. My motivation for hockey is not fully there, and I’d rather be completely honest than not be fully invested in playing.”
HV71 is now left scrambling, trying to find a center with only a month and change before their season is set to begin.
Fans have reacted, and many of their thoughts are mixed. Some are calling out Philp for bailing, with others saying that he so badly didn’t want to play for the team that he was willing to throw away his hockey career. But, it should be noted that this is not the first time he’s either retired or taken a break. He left for a full year in 2023-24 before returning and making the Oilers out of camp.
As for the HV71 team, this is not a great look. Speaking for many, one fan wrote, “But seriously, what’s wrong with that association. Sure you can be unlucky with things, but the track record in recent years is remarkable in things that have worked and not worked.”
That Philp has decided not to keep playing hockey and is just 27 years old means he either felt this wasn’t the right path for him, or he was struggling with the fact that his options in the NHL had pretty much disappeared.
Philp played 32 games in the NHL, 30 with Edmonton and two with the Hurricanes. He spent much of the 2025-26 season with the Chicago Wolves, posting eight goals and 17 points in 29 games.
