Boston Bruins’ Playoff Hopes Are Hanging by a Thread
Right now, the Boston Bruins are not sitting in the playoff picture. What will happen to the Bruins if they can’t make the playoffs?
My, how things have changed in the Atlantic Division. The Ottawa Senators look solid in their playoff drive. The Montreal Canadiens, only a couple of weeks ago, were the darling of the NHL, with their goalie play carrying them into a surprising postseason berth. Sadly, for them, it didn’t last.
However, perhaps the two biggest surprises are the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins. Both teams sit below the line that separates those teams in the postseason and those teams outside of the Stanley Cup journey. While the Lightning have a couple of games in hand, that’s not true for the Bruins.
Right Now, The Bruins Are Out of the Picture
Currently, the Bruins find themselves outside of the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. What a stark contrast to the powerhouse team they were last season. With their current record sitting at 26-22-6 and only 58 points in 54 games, the once-dominant Bruins are now struggling to stay in the playoff picture.
How bad is it? CBS Sports has projected that they have less than a 10% chance of making the postseason. It highlights just how far this team has fallen in such a short period.
A Look at the Bruins Poor Season’s Numbers
The numbers paint a scary picture for Boston. The team has been inconsistent. It’s put up a subpar 9-14-3 record on the road but a better 17-8-3 showing on home ice. Their goal differential is horrible. Right now, the Bruins sit at -26. The team isn’t just losing, it’s often getting blown out of games.
In addition, the Bruins’ special teams have been weak. Their power play hasn’t scored a single goal over the last stretch of games. With a recent 6-3-1 record, the Bruins have shown a pulse, but it might not be enough to overcome their challenges if they don’t turn things around quickly.
What Now if the Bruins Find Themselves Outside Looking In?
Given their current form and the competition they’ll need to beat, Boston’s playoff dreams could very well be dashed before they begin. Is there even a chance the team can get back into contention? If they can’t find a way to regain their old form, what changes might be on the horizon?
Could the team start offloading assets and sell ahead of the deadline? What does that mean for names like Trent Frederic or Brad Marchand?
The mighty Bruins might be sitting out the postseason this year. What a surprise if that happens.
