Avalanche Have Contacted Blackhawks About Availability of Patrick Kane

The Colorado Avalanche have reportedly reached out to the Chicago Blackhawks to show interest in Patrick Kane, should he be moved.

It’s not clear if the Chicago Blackhawks will actually consider moving forward Patrick Kane, but if they do, the Colorado Avalanche are apparently very interested in finding out what the cost would be to acquire the dynamic and consistent scorer.

Even if they go through a rebuild (which they are set to do), Kane has said he’d be open to ending his career with the Blackhawks. He knows that business is business and he could be moved, but there will be talk about Kane’s availability if the Blackhawks decide to break it all down this season.

Meanwhile, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period was a guest on the NHL Network and noted the Avs are trying to add ahead of the NHL Trade Deadline. He says they are one of the NHL’s best teams but looking to get even better and have gone big-game hunting a bit. They’ve talked to the Philadelphia Flyers about Claude Giroux, they’ve inquired with the Vancouver Canucks about J.T. Miller and they’re one of the teams that have reached out to the Blackhawks about Kane.

He notes the Avs is one of the teams that reached out and simply said, “If Patty Kane is looking to move, give us a call, we want to make that happen.”

Can the Avalanche Afford Patrick Kane?

This season, adding a player of Kane’s magnitude would be tricky (as it would adding Giroux), but next season, there’s a lot of money coming off the Avalanche’s books. They have multiple expiring contracts including the likes of Nazem Kadri André Burakovsky, and Valeri Nichushkin.

If the Avs are comfortable replacing some or all of those players with someone like Kane, the money works since nearly $12 million could be coming off the books next season at the forward position.
