7. Hollywood Whitewashing

In 2017’s Ghost in the Shell film adaptation of the Japanese franchise, Johansson was cast to play Motoko Kusanagi, a female cyborg built to carry the memories of a Japanese woman. With Director Rupert Sanders at the helm, the film received acclaim for its acting and cinematography but was widely condemned on social media as controversial for whitewashing the cast, Johansson’s Kusanagi in particular. In an interview with Marie Claire, Johansson responded to the backlash: “I certainly would never presume to play another race of a person. Diversity is important in Hollywood, and I would never want to feel like I was playing a character that was offensive. [But] having a franchise with a female protagonist driving it is such a rare opportunity.” (Marvel’s release of a Black Widow spin-off is still a while off.) Ghost in the Shell grossed $169.8M at the box office worldwide – a revenue of just $60M over the flick’s production budget.

At the end of the day, Scarlett’s chameleon-like talent knows no end, and as for bringing a cyborg to life – who among us would turn down such an opportunity?
