2. Politics
In the past several years, Johansson has been stepping outside her acting niche to become increasingly outspoken in political circles. In 2012, Scarlett gave an inspired speech on the final day of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. She is an advocate for Planned Parenthood, Medicaid, social housing programs, and equal pay. All of these social programs and campaign issues are arguably vital pillars to the health of a large and diverse society, but why should a rich, blonde actress care, or do any more than what she’s paid to do – act – especially if standing up for what she believes in, in a public forum, causes her to alienate a large conservative fanbase? Why should Ms. Johansson have any place in the political arena at all?
She’ll be the first to say it’s because she is first and foremost a citizen of the United States and a young woman of this world, and if she can use her celebrity, her famous face, her platform of privilege to encourage her fans to raise their voices to fight injustices with the #metoo and #timesup movements, or to exercise their right to vote in the 2016 presidential election’s Save The Day campaign, then it is her responsibility to do so. Last year, Johansson spoke alongside Hillary Clinton and other world leaders at the 2017 Women In The World Summit. But if you can’t take her seriously, at the end of the day, Scarlett can always speak out by doing what she does best: acting out on SNL.
