6. Filming Avengers While Pregnant

In 2015 and 2016, Johansson again played Black Widow in the MCU films Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War. During the filming of Ultron, a combination of concealing costumes, stunt doubles, close-ups, and camera angles were utilized to hide her pregnancy. Marvel’s timeline of movie releases didn’t allow for shooting delays, so Writer-Director Joss Whedon was determined to move filming forward, despite Johansson being several months along in her pregnancy. Said Whedon, “We’re not avoiding any of the danger because the stuntwomen do the danger—as has always been the case. She’s very central to the movie and when we heard [about the pregnancy] we scheduled things around that. She’s not going to spend the whole movie carrying groceries. We didn’t trim any scenes. We’re like: We’ll make it work.”  Making a movie has a thousand moving parts, and an actor’s workday can involve long, grueling days on set. An expectant mom in that environment would feel a greater degree of exhaustion and strain than perhaps her male co-stars. Fortunately, Johansson is a professional, with a team of handlers around her to ensure she didn’t over-do it, and baby Rose Dorothy was born healthy in August 2014.
