Logan Stanley is one of those guys that, on paper, makes a lot of sense for the Toronto Maple Leafs. At 6-foot-7, he’s the kind of defenceman who can lean on people, protect space in front of the net, and generally be annoying to play against. And now that his time in Winnipeg looks like it’s over, Toronto is naturally going to be linked to someone like that.

But John Chayka can’t just think, “We need big.” He’s building a team that’s supposed to be faster and more aggressive, with a more modern style than the Maple Leafs have leaned on lately. So the real question isn’t whether Stanley is useful. It’s whether he fits the way this Leafs team is trying to play.

Stanley made his name as a big, stay-at-home type in Winnipeg. He owns an interesting skill set. The issue is whether it meshes with a Toronto team trying to play quicker and rely less on the old “grind you down” approach. If the Maple Leafs bring him in just to fill a size/toughness gap, it could end up backfiring if his hockey decisions don’t line up with the pace they want.

Being Big and Physical Helps, But It Isn’t the Key Feature

And that’s the thing about a player like Stanley in today’s NHL. Being huge helps, but it doesn’t cover everything. If he can’t move the puck well enough, or if he struggles to keep up when play gets fast and open, then he’s not going to look like a solution out there. He could just get stuck reacting instead of controlling.

So if Toronto wants him, he’ll get a low-risk look. Like a tryout or a cheap depth deal, not something where they’re expecting him to be an everyday guy right away. That way, if he surprises and fits, great. If not, Toronto can move on without it turning into a bigger mess.

Stanley’s Size Is Interesting, But It Might Not Help Him in Toronto

The bottom line is that Stanley’s size is interesting. But the Maple Leafs won’t be grabbing him just because he’s 6-foot-7. If he ends up in blue and white, it’ll be because they think they can actually use him the right way—not because they checked the “big defender” box.

There is a place for a player with Stanley’s skill set, but it’s likely in a protected role. Does Toronto have space for such an experiment? The truth is, I think they will likely pass.
