NHL Trade Talk Recap: Red Wings, Maple Leafs & Oilers Have Room

In today’s NHL Trade Talk Recap (August 7, 2026), we’re looking at three recaps that are basically all about teams getting stuck at the worst possible time. Whether it’s the Red Wings not moving Dylan Larkin because they don’t even have a GM to run the talks, or Maple Leafs fans wondering if Andy O’Brien was hired for the Bobrovsky fit, or Stan Bowman saying the Oilers have the cap flexibility now to stay patient this summer, then make the right trade(s) during the season because the playoff-ready team won’t be the same as the team that opens the year.

Larkin Trade Isn’t Really Stuck on Larkin

Dylan Larkin being asked about isn’t the problem. Detroit has talked to four teams (Panthers, Wild, Golden Knights, Stars) that Larkin would actually waive for. But nothing is getting done, and the biggest reason is simple: the Red Wings don’t even have a general manager to properly run the trade negotiations.

Detroit also seems to be holding out for a true “value-now” first-line center type return, not just picks or prospects. And even the teams that are willing can’t cough up those pieces without blowing up their own plans. So basically, everyone’s waiting on Detroit to get a GM. Then you still might be looking at a long, drawn-out process.

Maple Leafs Hire: Bobrovsky Connection or Bigger Plan?

When the Maple Leafs hired Andy O’Brien, it’s totally fair to wonder if it was basically to “take care of” Sergei Bobrovsky. O’Brien came from Florida, Bobrovsky was there too, and since joining Toronto he’s talked glowingly about Bobrovsky. That makes the connection feel pretty obvious.

But when you consider the bigger picture, it looks more like O’Brien was brought in for the bigger “sport performance” overhaul. He’ll work on strength, recovery, nutrition, rehab, and mental stuff for the whole organization. So the Florida/Bobrovsky overlap is real and probably helped the fit. However, it doesn’t seem like that was the whole reason for the hire.

Oilers Have Flex Now (So Expect a Mid-Season Move)

Stan Bowman says the Oilers finally have the cap space they’ve been missing, and they’re not trying to waste it by signing something random this summer. The plan is to hold the money and stay flexible, then jump on the right opportunity once it shows up during the season.

Bowman hinted that the team that starts the year won’t be the same team that’s ready for the playoffs. With how tight the cap has been the last couple of seasons, they couldn’t make certain deals. Now they want that breathing room, then make a trade when it’s actually possible, and keep adding as the deadline and playoff push get closer.
