Sam Bennett’s Resurgence Sparks Talk of Flames Reunion

Sam Bennett’s resurgence with the Florida Panthers makes him a top free-agent target, and one analyst is linking him to the Calgary Flames,

Sam Bennett’s transformation since leaving the Calgary Flames has made him a player that teams around the NHL would love to have. He is set to earn a hefty pay raise as a pending UFA this summer; should he not re-sign in Florida, several organizations will be bidding for his services. His play with the Panthers has warranted the attention. However, one interesting team being linked to Bennett is his former club, the Calgary Flames.

The Flames drafted Bennett fourth overall in 2014, and Eric Francis of Sportsnet wonders if they would be intrigued by the idea of him coming back. Francis writes: “The Flames have been actively searching for an impact center since they lost Elias Lindholm last winter. They’ve also been looking desperately for someone to help Huberdeau regain his Florida form.”

Bennett had his ups and downs as a member of the Flames but has flourished in Florida, becoming a versatile center and playoff performer. So, why would the Panthers move on from Bennett? Francis says they’d like to retain him, “However, failed negotiations could result in a trade, or he could simply sign elsewhere after one last post-season binge in South Florida.”

Could the Flames Really Be Contenders for Bennett?

Bennett has emerged as a top performer this season, posting 13 goals and 13 assists in 30 games while showcasing grit and tenacity. Francis adds, “With more than $19 million in projected cap space, GM Craig Conroy is poised to make a big splash when he feels the right player comes along.” Conroy made feel Bennett is the right player, and all of the previous names who thought it wise to move Bennett in the first place are gone.

Out is the coaching staff and Brad Treliving. Bennett said, “I think I just needed that fresh start.” Has his time away provided that for him? Could he be ready to come back? Or is that bridge burned?

He’s expected to draw significant interest as a pending free agent and the Flames may or may not be on his radar. That is, assuming he can’t come to an agreement with the Panthers.
