Red Wings Suspend Dylan Larkin, Both Sides Release Blunt Statements

from the team. See what both sides are saying.

Dylan Larkin has decided he’s done playing nice. His agent, Pat Brisson, released a statement after the Detroit Red Wings forward decided he’s no longer going to suit up for the team and will wait until a trade is made. Regardless of whether the Red Wings suspend Larkin — which they now have every right to do — Larkin is taking a stand.

“Dylan’s had enough of the situation,” Brisson said. “We believe he’s been very professional and cooperative through this process.”

The Red Wings have responded. As per GM Shawn Horcoff, Larkin is being suspended without pay. They wrote in a statement:

“Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings. We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay. We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan. In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization’s long-term goals. I want to thank and commend our coaches and players for their continued focus, and being committed to competing every day.”

The statements follow reports that Larkin’s side is pressuring Detroit to finish a deal. Multiple teams are still in the mix, with Minnesota believed to have made one of the stronger offers so far. The Red Wings are reportedly checking whether anyone else will step up.

Washington and Utah remain interesting teams to watch after active summers, though neither has had recent Larkin discussions, per reports. The New Jersey Devils might also be a team to watch, but nothing is imminent at this time.

Larkin will take a hit to his wallet. He will forfeit $41,237.11 per day, and the Red Wings are in no rush to trade him now.

Larkin Trade Drama Is At An All-Time High

It’s the latest twist in a year that has been anything but smooth for the longtime Red Wing. Larkin said he wanted to be a Red Wing for life, but after Detroit missed the playoffs again, he requested a trade and initially limited his list to three contenders. He then lost the captaincy and reported to camp offering few answers. He eventually returned to the lineup, saying his focus was on winning games, and later expanded his list of preferred destinations to 10 teams.

Now he’s out of the lineup entirely, and his camp is publicly voicing frustration. Horcoff appears frustrated as well. This is going to be an interesting game of chicken. Will there be a new sense of urgency? It doesn’t appear so from the Red Wings side of things.
