Larkin Won’t Play for Red Wings, GM to Address Media About Trade
Is Dylan Larkin being traded?: the forward won’t play for the Red Wings on Thursday night and the GM is set to address the media.
Dylan Larkin wasn’t just taking a maintenance day when he missed practice for the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday. Less than 24 hours later, it’s been learned that Larkin won’t play for the Red Wings in their game Thursday night, and general manager Shawn Horcoff intends to address the media about the situation.
It remains unclear whether Horcoff will talk about a trade or some other reason Larkin won’t be in the lineup. Fans and analysts will want to know, however, if this is trade-related. Elliotte Friedman writes, “We will see how Horcoff addresses this, but it sounds like the current plan is for Larkin not to play until he his traded.”
Are Trade Conversations Picking Up?
Early speculation is that a trade is pending and they are keeping him out for precautionary reasons. Head coach Todd McLellan just shared that Larkin won’t be playing. He didn’t say how many games or why. He’s leaving that up to Horcoff to relay, which makes it clear that this isn’t an injury situation.
Pierre LeBrun writes, “Hearing that trade talks have escalated on Larkin. Which doesn’t mean it necessarily leads to a trade imminently but things have escalated. Things can still go a few different directions at the moment.”

What Might Be Going on With Larkin?
Larkin has expanded his list of preferred destinations to 10 teams. He requested a move, and while the Red Wings haven’t found a trade partner, Larkin is trying to make it so that he can get a fresh start. The Minnesota Wild have been most often linked to the forward, but the Montreal Canadiens are also said to be keenly interested.
On the latest 32 Thoughts Podcast, Friedman said a deal to Montreal is possible, but the Canadiens would have to “reverse engineer” it. He has not added them to his list of 10 teams. The Canadiens would need to present Detroit with an offer strong enough that the Red Wings approach Larkin and ask whether he’d be open to going. Perhaps the Canadiens have done so and they are just waiting for Larkin to make a decision?
