Oilers Trade Goalie, Team Seen Scouting Canadiens and Jets

The Edmonton Oilers traded Alex Stalock to San Jose and are also scouting teams ahead of this year’s NHL Trade Deadline.

The Edmonton Oilers moved a goaltender this week, trading Alex Stalock to the San Jose Sharks for future considerations. The 34-year-old netminder missed the 2020-21 NHL season after being diagnosed with myocarditis in November 2020. He was claimed by the Oilers in 2021 when the team was struggling to find goaltending help but didn’t play a single game for the franchise, getting into only five AHL games for the Bakersfield Condors.

Stalock was, at one time, a solid backup and put up some good numbers in Minnesota. Sharks assistant general manager Joe Will said in a statement: “The acquisition of Alex gives our club another goaltender with significant NHL experience. He is a player we are very familiar with and someone who is extremely well-liked by his teammates.”

Part of this move likely has to do with the injury James Reimer suffered during Tuesday’s game with the Vegas Golden Knights. The Sharks did not offer an update on Reimer, but it could be that he’s out longer-term than the Sharks would have hoped.

For the Oilers, this help clear a contract off the books, potentially ahead of the deadline where they might want to add.

Oilers Eyeing Up Jets and Canadiens Players?

There’s some buzz surrounding the Oilers that they might be looking at a player or players from one of the Montreal Canadiens or Winnipeg Jets. While it’s not clear who the team is interested in, there are a couple of names that could be intriguing for Oilers fans.

Ben Chairot is likely to be moved by the Canadiens but the Oilers are not keen on the idea of moving a first-round draft selection. He seems unlikely. An RFA like Artturi Lehkonen would be an incredible addition and give the Oilers a chance to add to their depth at forward with names like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jesse Puljujarvi on the shelf. There are some teams competing for the player, so he too might be a tough get.

The Jets are a team that has underperformed and someone like Andrew Copp could be moved considering his status as a pending UFA. The same could go for Paul Statsny.
