Oilers Looking for Immediate Help in Face of Numerous Injuries

The Edmonton Oilers are likely in a situation where a trade is becoming important since they’re being decimated by injuries.

As per a few sources, including Kurt Leavins of The Edmonton Journal, expect the Edmonton Oilers to ramp up trade talks in the face of a number of current injuries that are plaguing the organization. He writes, “I don’t think the Oilers are a complete team even with a better solution in between the pipes. I had a wise old baseball manager who would say “You’ve got to get there to win”. And it looks to me that the Oilers need help now.”

Leavins goes on to note that the Oilers are tired, mostly because the team has little choice but to overplay their main guys with so many players out of the lineup. While head coach Jay Woodcroft was lowering the minutes for players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, their time on ice has skyrocketed again because the Oilers are trying to compete without a number of key pieces in their top nine. Leavins writes, “They’re banged up and (as a result) their best players look gassed. As a result, I’m not convinced Holland can wait until the deadline.”

Who And What Might the Oilers Target?

The scribe notes that the Oilers could go out and try to land another defenseman. With Tyson Barrie out and with Evan Bouchard leaving Saturday’s game versus the Montreal Canadiens (due to illness), that would make sense. The Oilers are playing an 11 forwards and seven defensemen system but are asking a number of inexperienced blueliners to take on a larger role. Leavins notes that someone like Justin Braun of the Philadelphia Flyers could be on the Oilers’ radar. The Oilers have been scouting the Flyers of late.

At forward, Leavins mentions the name of pending UFA Ryan Carpenter. A right-shot center, Carpenter is 52.3% on the dot this season and plays on Chicago’s top PK unit. He has some history with head coach Jay Woodcroft when the two were in San Jose.
