Oilers’ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Out For 2-3 Weeks, Duncan Keith Back In

The Edmonton Oilers got more bad news on Tuesday as forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was sent home from the team’s active road trip and will be back in Edmonton getting more tests while the Oilers try to pull out a couple of wins versus the Philadelphia Flyers and Chicago Blackhawks.

Head coach Jay Woodcroft notes that Nugent-Hopkins is “more week-to-week than he is day-to-day” and an upper-body injury (shoulder issue) will keep him out of the lineup for some time, but not long enough that the player will go on LTIR for any lengthy amount of time or give the Oilers cap flexibility to make subsequential moves.

Nugent-Hopkins leads the Oilers with 30 assists and is third with 37 points in 45 games. Clearly, his loss will be felt throughout the lineup, especially when it comes to the team’s power play and their depth at forward, something they were finally starting to get figured out before Jesse Puljujarvi and Kailer Yamamoto also went down with injuries.

Duncan Keith Back

There is some good news for the Oilers as defenseman Duncan Keith will return to the lineup Tuesday against the Flyers. After taking a nasty spill into the end boards, he was taken out of the lineup for precautionary reasons and the Oilers certainly missed him on their blue line where they’ve been running youngsters.

“It’s good to see these young guys: Lagesson, Niemelainen, Broberg and obviously Bouch coming along as the season progresses. We’re going to need them down the stretch,” said Keith. Philip Broberg was loaned back to the Condors as a result of the Oilers ability to put Keith back in.

In other Oilers news, Brendan Perlini was placed on waivers by the team and has cleared, while Kris Russell was moved to LTIR.
