Knoblauch weighs his future, Crosby stays flexible, and Treliving admits the Maple Leafs’ problems ran deeper than injuries.

This edition (May 21, 2026) of NHL Trade Talk Recap includes three quick reviews. First, a coaching crossroads for former Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch: should he press pause or chase the next job? Knoblauch’s at a crossroads; take the job or press pause?

Kris Knoblauch’s in a weird spot: the Oilers let him go before his new deal even started. So he’s technically still getting paid but isn’t coaching. That buys him time — he can jump back on the carousel if a big job opens, or he can take a breather and be picky. With teams like Vancouver, Toronto and LA potentially available, there are great opportunities that could rehab his rep fast if he jumps in and wins.

But there’s also a solid case for sitting tight. He’s paid, settled in Edmonton, and just came off an intense run. He doesn’t have to grab the first opening that comes up. Stepping away lets him be selective and avoid inheriting immediate, unrealistic expectations. The risk is that being out of sight can become out of another team’s mind. So it really comes down to whether he wants immediate relevance or controlled patience — both choices make sense.

The Risk and Reward of Knoblauch Sitting Out vs Jumping Back In

Crosby’s Playing It Year-to-Year; Not Retiring, Just Staying Flexible

Sidney Crosby says he’s going to take things one year at a time contract-wise, but don’t read that as him edging toward retirement. He told The Athletic he’s not thinking “one or two seasons” — he wants to keep playing as long as he can — but prefers short deals that give both him and the Penguins flexibility with the cap and roster moves. Basically, he’s aiming to help the team however he can while keeping options open if the situation changes.

Sidney Crosby of the Penguins isn’t planning to retire soon.

Crosby’s still producing at a high level (another point-per-game year). And he wants to stay in the mix as Pittsburgh pushes for contention. Talks with GM Kyle Dubas are expected this summer and, if history repeats, a one-year deal around $8.7M wouldn’t be a shock. Bottom line: he’s not quitting — just being smart about the next contract.

Brad Treliving Says He Owns the Leafs’ Collapse, and It’s More Than Injuries

Brad Treliving didn’t dodge blame — he flat-out said it’s on him. On TSN OverDrive, he admitted the Leafs didn’t have the buy-in needed this year, and while everyone gets a share of the blame (management, coaches, players), the buck stops with the GM. He shrugged off injuries as excuses — yes, they lost goalies, but every team deals with that — and kept coming back to a deeper problem: Toronto wasn’t controlling play. Even in wins, they weren’t driving possession or the shot numbers, and once the luck dried up, the results followed.

Now there’s fallout. Treliving’s gone, the coach’s seat is empty, and fresh management is doing a full review — which means players could be next if they don’t fit the new plan. Names like Matthews, Nylander and Rielly are already getting whispered about; if new leadership “gets a vibe” they don’t like, trades could happen. The bottom line is that this wasn’t just a bad record; it exposed cultural and commitment issues that the organization will try to fix, and that process could get messy.
