Rumoured Šimon Nemec Trade Request Could Spark NHL Bidding War

Reports circulating online suggest Šimon Nemec may want out of New Jersey, potentially creating a big NHL offseason storyline.

The New Jersey Devils may suddenly find themselves at the center of one of the NHL’s biggest offseason storylines. According to reports circulating online and through Slovak media, young defenseman Šimon Nemec has reportedly requested a trade after frustrations regarding his role and future with the organization.

At this point, nothing has been officially confirmed by the Devils or Nemec himself. In fact, the same outlet (@RonoAnalyst) that first shared the report is saying another Slovak media outlet has called the original report false. However, the rumors have quickly generated discussion across the league because of the type of player Nemec is projected to become.

The 22-year-old former second-overall pick remains one of hockey’s most intriguing young right-shot defensemen and would likely command significant interest if he truly became available.

Why Nemec Could Want a Fresh Start

Nemec entered the NHL carrying enormous expectations after being selected second overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. Viewed as a future top-pairing defenseman with strong offensive instincts and elite puck-moving ability, many expected him to quickly become a major part of New Jersey’s long-term core.

Instead, his development path has been somewhat inconsistent.

The Devils already possess a crowded blue line, making it difficult for Nemec to consistently secure top-four minutes at the NHL level. He has spent time moving between the NHL and AHL while trying to establish himself full time, something that can become frustrating for a young player who believes he is ready for a larger opportunity.

Reports have also suggested there has been little progress toward a contract extension, which has only intensified speculation surrounding his future. Whether the reports are accurate or not, it would not be surprising if Nemec eventually wanted a clearer path to a major NHL role elsewhere.

Sharks Could Make a Bold Move

One of the most interesting potential landing spots could be the San Jose Sharks.

San Jose continues rebuilding around a young core and still desperately needs a long-term right-shot defenseman capable of anchoring its blue line for years to come. Nemec would immediately fit that timeline and could grow alongside the organization’s next wave of stars.

The biggest question would be the cost.

Would the Sharks consider moving the second-overall pick in this year’s draft for a player like Nemec? It would certainly be aggressive, but acquiring a young defenseman who already has NHL experience could accelerate their rebuild much faster than waiting several years for another prospect to develop.

For a rebuilding team searching for cornerstone pieces, Nemec could become extremely attractive.

Could the Maple Leafs Consider Moving First Overall?

The Toronto Maple Leafs also present a fascinating possibility.

After winning the draft lottery, Toronto suddenly possesses one of the NHL’s most valuable assets with the first-overall pick. However, the Leafs remain firmly in win-now mode and have consistently searched for stability on the right side of their defense.

Nemec would immediately address a major organizational need while still fitting the age range of Toronto’s long-term core.

The challenge, of course, is whether the Leafs would actually entertain moving the first-overall pick for a player who has not fully broken out yet at the NHL level. It would be a massive gamble, but one that could potentially strengthen Toronto immediately rather than waiting for another prospect to develop.

Anaheim and Edmonton Could Be Fits

If Nemec prefers joining a playoff-caliber team or an organization trending upward quickly, the Anaheim Ducks could make plenty of sense.

Anaheim took a major step forward this season and already possesses one of the NHL’s best young cores. Adding Nemec to that group could help solidify the Ducks’ blue line for years to come while giving them another high-end puck mover capable of handling top-four minutes.

The Edmonton Oilers are another team worth monitoring closely.

Edmonton never truly replaced Philip Broberg after losing him, and the organization could still use another young defenseman behind Evan Bouchard capable of growing into a long-term top-four role. Nemec’s skating and offensive instincts would fit naturally within Edmonton’s system.

The Oilers also possess intriguing trade assets that could interest New Jersey. Prospect Ike Howard could become a name to watch if discussions ever became serious, especially for a Devils organization potentially looking to add younger offensive talent in return.

Devils May Have a Major Decision Ahead

At the moment, this remains speculation fueled by circulating reports online. Still, if Nemec truly wants a change of scenery, the Devils could soon face one of the toughest decisions of their offseason.

Young right-shot defensemen with top-four upside rarely become available, and if Nemec hits the trade market, there will be no shortage of teams lining up with offers.

For now, all eyes remain on New Jersey to see whether these rumours gain traction or quietly disappear as the offseason unfolds.
