Analyst Says He Thinks Canadiens “About to Make a Move”
Are the Montreal Canadiens about to make a trade? One analyst thinks they are, if only to respond to other teams in the division.
“Does Pierre McGuire know something we don’t about a move coming for the Montreal Canadiens?” That’s the question one social media account asked after watching an interview video where the long-time NHL analyst suggested the Canadiens were “about to make a move.”
What move he didn’t say.
McGuire talked about how the Toronto Maple Leafs made a series of moves and the division was active. He wasn’t sure what was happening in Detroit and why that franchise is in such disarray. He also hinted that the Habs might make a trade in response to everything that has been going on around them. “Toronto’s made some moves. Montreal’s about to make a move, I think. You’ve seen the division; Florida made moves, Tampa made moves. Detroit is floundering…”
Responses to the video ranged from “he doesn’t know s—” to someone pointing out, “To me, it sounds like he believes that they have been posturing all summer and will now move. I predict something by the golf tournament.” Another wrote, “Everyone expects a move given their lack of moves and two roster players still RFAs.”
What might the Canadiens have up their sleeve? There’s some chatter that Sam Montembeault might be the odd goalie out. Could a trade be possible to move a netminder and pick up something else?

The Montreal Gazette’s Stu Cowan also suggested in a recent article that two of the team’s biggest RFA names, Arber Xhekaj and Zack Bolduc, could be dealt. Cowan wrote:
“The fact neither player has signed yet leads me to believe they could become part of sign-and-trade deals before Sept. 16 — like the one the Canadiens made last summer to acquire Noah Dobson from the New York Islanders after he had agreed to an eight-year, US$76-million contract as a restricted free agent.”
